Summer Jobs for Kids and Summer Jobs for Teens

Ok, school is out for the summer. If your kid is 16 years or older, chances are he or she is contemplating working this summer and like most teens who are looking for summer employment they really don't have a clue where to start to look for a job.

For obvious reasons, most kids do not want to flip burgers at Mc Donald's or work at Taco Bell. However, when asked what kind of job they want to get, the usual response is, "I don't know."

Some kids do not mind flipping burgers; however, for most kids, this will be their first summer job opportunity and it would be very wise to think of a field of work that is related to what he or she may be interested in doing for the long haul.

For instance, your son or daughter may want to go into the medical field. Some may want to eventually become nurses or doctors or work as a lab technician. If that were the case then it would be wise to see if he or she has the aptitude for such a career choice. To see if your kid has what it takes to eventually pursue such a vocation it would be a good idea to take a career aptitude test. Career aptitude testing can help identify what your kid may be suited for. If your kid is ready to take a career test then we have one that will help sort out what he or she may be suited for.

However, if the generic career aptitude test is not what they want to take and they are sure that they want a particular field to specialize in, we offer tests for computer aptitude testing and a test certificate for babysitting. Most girls who baby sit may decide that working with kids is what they want to do when they are an adult and may pursue a career in teaching and if that is the case, she may want to see if her typing skills are above average. If your daughter wants to see if she has above average typing skills she can take this typing test and see how well she can type. Actually, this test is not limited to girls. If your son is planning to have some form of job where he will be working with a PC chances are, he will need excellent typing skills as well. Many kids can type; however, text messaging has really become such fad these days that it may ruin your child's ability to actually type in an acceptable standard proficiently. Text messaging can ruin typing skills just as bad as Ebonics can ruin speaking English proficiently.

List of Summer Jobs for Kids and Summer Jobs for Teens

  • Lawn Service
  • A lawn mower, weed eater and a leaf blower can earn a teenager some serious money for the summer. A typical fee for suburban area lawn service which includes mowing the lawn, edging around sidewalks, patios, and drive way and then blowing the debris off of the porch, sidewalk and drive way usually will net a kid anywhere from $30.00 - $50.00 per yard. That is taking into consideration that the yard takes no more than one hour to start to finish.

Kids who do lawn service in more rural areas can expect to make about $5- $10 less per yard.

  • Advantages
  • - The money that a teenager can make is totally up to him or her. If the kid is old enough to drive and has an economical truck and wants to hustle for some serious cash, he or she can make upwards of $300.00 per day!Hours can be flexible and most of your clients will have no preferred time slot in which to have the lawn cut. Most customers will want you to mow on a certain day each week. However, for others who do not water their lawn or use fertilizer, every 2 weeks is the norm for those types of yards. Another advantage is once you establish a good reputation with being courteous, fair prices and being dependable, your customer will refer you to other customers who will refer you to other customers...See where this is going?
  • Disadvantages
  • - There really are no disadvantages with doing lawn service. However, unless your family has a mower to spare as well as a weed eater and a leaf blower, start up costs can be expensive. It would be wise to invest in really good equipment. A Murray mower is ok for using at home as a personal inexpensive mower, but it will not hold up the entire summer. It would be wise to invest in a self propelled mower such as Snapper. However, a sticker price for a new walk behind Snapper is costly! For example, this self-propelled commercial 21-inch mower by Snapper costs $829.00. But if you are a hard worker, you can easily recover your investment on this commercial grade lawn mower that will last you for many summers. Time it takes to recover your investment is totally dependent on how hard you want to work. A hard worker who can take advantage of the long days and can hack 12 hour days can recover the investment in 1 or 2 weeks.

Another cost to consider is mowing blades. It is always best to carry at least 3 sharp replacement blades and brand new blades for Snapper are not cheap. However, if you are going to attempt a start up lawn service, it is always better to be prepared than not. If you get in the middle of a lawn and whack a stone or a brick and it chips or bends your blade, the lawn can not be finished without changing the blade on the fly. Attempting to do so will scalp the lawn and that can result in no payment from the home owner and a ruined reputation.

As a kid, I had this happen a couple of times and each time it happened, I brought it to the attention of the home owner and pointed out the "scalped" are of the lawn and apologized and made sure not to charge them a dime. It's frustrating but that goes with cutting lawns.

Another investment is a good bench grinder. You'll need a bench grinder to sharpen your blades. You can always find a good deal at a local pawn shop for a decent Black and Decker for around $25 - $30. Or you can go all out and buy a brand new one at Sears for $59.00

Blade sharpening is important. Sure you can pay someone $5.00 - $10.00 to sharpen your blade but take into consideration that if you are a hard worker, you'll be needing sharpened blades 1 - 2 times per week and that can add up. Not to mention there may be times that you will have to wait till someone can find time to sharpen your blades. In the lawn business, "time is money." Besides, sharpening a mowing blade is really simple. If you have sense enough to start a mower and mow a lawn, you can figure out how to put a nice edge on a blade.

Invest in a good weed eater. A weed trimmer such as the Troy Built 17" Straight Shaft String Trimmer. This is one tool that is durable and will serve 2 important functions:

1. You will be able to edge around the house and near fences where your mower obviously could not cut.
2. The straight shaft will allow you to utilize the trimmer as an edger. There is absolutely no reason to spend extra money on a separate tool such as an edger when with just a little practice, you can do a much better job using a straight shaft weed eater. If you are serious about starting a lawn service then take some time and watch a professional lawn service crew in action. You'll see a couple of guys mowing and depending on the size of the lawn 1 or 2 using a weed eater to both trim uncut grass around the home and one guy with the straight shaft trimmer edging around the curb, sidewalk, patio, driveway, etc. You will notice that he is holding the shaft so that the nylon string attacks the space between the sidewalk and the lawn or patio and other areas where a cumbersome edger would normally be used. Once you get that technique down, you'll be amazed at just how well that manicures a lawn.

You will need a decent yard blower to blow away lawn clippings. You have one or two choices. Hand held or back pack. Do not purchase an electric blower or weed eater! Most home owners would be offended by you using their electricity and it takes more time to use an extension cord and there are too many environmental variables such as weather, rain, dew on the lawn. Combine that with a nicked power cord and you could be electrocuted!

My preference is the back pack blower. If you are going to work hard to make as much money for summer as you can, you can't beat a back pack blower. There will be lawns that a hand held blower would be well suited for. Those are your smaller lawns. However, if you work hard, eventually, you will start making top dollar doing larger yards in nicer areas in your town and most of these lawns have multiple areas that will require more time and effort to clear debris. This is where the back pack blower will save your arm and shoulder from muscle strain! Here is a nice Husqvarna 25-cc Gas Powered Backpack Blower for $199.00. This is not that expensive and if you take care of it, it will last for many more summer jobs. However, once you do start making some money, you will may see that it would be wise to have a back up blower, in the event you main back pack blower craps out on you. I'm not going to list a specific brand or link to a simple hand held blower. If you get into the business of doing lawn service as a way to earn money for the summer then instinct will guide you where the best deal on a hand held gas blower is.

There is a few other items that I assume that you would already have that would complete your list for your summer lawn service. However, if you do not have them the list is short: A basic set of mechanics tools. You can get a good set with ratchet set, wrenches in both S.A.E. size and metric for less than $50.00 Whatever you do, do not buy the cheapest no name set that is made in Japan! Buy a set of Craftsman Tools from Sears. You can catch a good and basic set for less than $50.00.

You will need at least 2, 5 gallon gas cans and 1, 1 gallon gas can for your oil mixed gas. That's what your back pack blower will be fueled with as well as your trimmer. Also invest in a 5 gallon Coleman Ice Cooler. Staying hydrated is very important. You should avoid soda pop and drink water and Gatorade to rehydrate with. So having a large cooler that will hold a full days supply of fresh ice water and Gatorade is a definite requirement if you want to take on doing lawn service all summer.

To sum it all up. An up start lawn service is a very lucrative way to earn summer money for kids; that is if you have the financial backing to get started and you own a truck or you plan on purchasing a truck when you are old enough to drive. If you are willing to put in the time and effort, you can make several thousand dollars every summer mowing lawns.

Check back frequently. New summer jobs for kids will be added to this list. However, consider taking a vocational test or an aptitude test in one of the following categories listed below.

Listed below are some vocational tests that may be of interest to your teenagers who are planning to work this summer. The best way to land a job is to be prepared and there is no way better to be prepared than to actually take a test in a field of interest and once the test is completed, your teen will know if he or she needs to brush up on some areas of weakness and accentuate the areas of strength.

If your kid is computer literate and enjoys PC's then an obvious area too consider is computer programming. Computer programmers write, test, debug, and maintain the detailed instructions, called computer programs, that computers must follow to perform their functions. Programmers also conceive, design, and test logical structures for solving problems by computer. Many technical innovations in programming, advanced computing technologies and sophisticated new languages and programming tools have redefined the role of a programmer and elevated much of the programming work done today. Job titles and descriptions may vary, depending on the organization.

If your teenager is interested in staying fit, he or she may be interested in any one of these tests and certifications for health and fitness.
