If seeking employment, your future employer may have you take a test similar to a mental test of ability. Employers use aptitude tests in the pre-employment testing process. The four general types of mental tests are related to the behavior each age group exhibits. For example, infants are predominantly sensory motor; toddlers are more perceptual; school age children are more concrete and liberal in their intellectual abilities.

Generally, tests given at later ages are more valid. Below the age of five years, tests measure mainly sensory motor and perceptual skills rather than problem solving or critical thinking skills. Babies are usually tested lying down or on their mother's laps; while other children can sit alone, use their hands to manipulate objects and communicate with language. These early tests of sensory-motor abilities do not predict adult intelligence accurately. School age tests measure memory, math, and information and they are more valid.

Adult tests measure complex intellectual abilities like memory, information, integration, perceptual completion, and vocabulary. While adult and school age tests are more reliable and valid, preschool and infant are useful as developmental indicators. Some adult tests differentiate among very bright candidates applying for advanced training in graduate or professional schools. They are designed to differentiate among people who score at the upper limits of regular adult intelligence tests.
