Comprehensive Assessment of School Environments Satisfaction Questionnaire

The purpose of the Comprehensive Assessment of School Environments Satisfaction Questionnaire is to assess perceptions held by students, teachers and parents about the physical, social and learning environments of a school. The assessment is made up of four separate surveys the School Climate Survey, the Student Satisfaction Survey, the Teacher Satisfaction Survey and the Parent Satisfaction Survey. The readability level of the parent survey is grade 8.

Applicable Domains: Satisfaction, Responsibility and Independence.

Administration: Group administration of paper and pencil surveys. Number of items ranges from 46 to 58, depending on survey. Completion time is estimated to be about 45 minutes. Student surveys are intended for students in grades 6-12.

The assessment was normed in 1985 on a sample of 35 schools representing the key variables of geography, size, governance, and student characteristics. Content validity was established through a task force's selection of items based on existing research and surveys. Factor analysis during field testing identified clusters of related items, which were used as separate scales. Internal consistency of the surveys was high, with averages ranging from 0.81 to 0.88. Test-retest reliability of the individual subscales ranged from 0.62 to 0.92.

Scoring: Surveys can be hand or computer scored. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has made several computer programs available for use with mainframe, mid-size, or microcomputers.

Author: C. Halderson, E. Kelley, J. Keefe, and P. Berge (1989).

Scoring the Brigance Diagnostic Inventories: The items on each inventory are scored as either mastered or unmastered. No summary scores are obtained.
