The Primary Test of Nonverbal Intelligence - PTONI- assesses reasoning abilities in young children ages 3 - 9.11 years of age and the test can be administered in 5 - 15 minutes. The PTONI identifies severe intellectual deficits and superior cognitive intelligence to help predict future school success, based on family history, educational background and personality traits. It is a valuable tool for psychologists, diagnosticians, special educators and speech-language pathologists. The nonverbal format of the PTONI is especially appropriate for testing children who typically are not verbally or motorically well developed. Directions are provided in eight alternative languages, making it an appropriate assessment of intelligence for children from diverse language backgrounds. |
The Primary Test of Nonverbal Intelligence format requires the child to look at a series of pictures on each page in the Picture Book, and point to the one picture that does not belong with the others. Items are arranged in order of difficulty. Early items measure lower order of reasoning (visual and spatial perception). Later items measure higher-order reasoning abilities (analogical thinking, sequential reasoning and categorical formulation). Performance is recorded as a standard score (called the Nonverbal Index), a percentile rank and an age equivalent.
