Question: What is the Parenting Stress Index?
The PSI measures the relative magnitude of stress in the parent-child relationship, to identify high-risk situations as early as possible. This allows for earlier intervention, before the child's development is affected. It has proven useful in programs aimed at early identification and prevention of family problems. |
The PSI consists of 120 items, and yields a Total Stress Score, plus scale scores for the following Child and Parent Characteristics, which pinpoint sources of stress with the family:
Studies have shown the PSI to maintain its validity with diverse non-English-speaking cultures. Transcultural research involving Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Latin American Hispanic and French Canadian demonstrated comparable statistical characteristics to those reported in the PSI manual.
PSI Short Form (PSI/SF) The PSI/SF is a direct derivative of the PSI, but contains only 36 items, and is administered in less than 10 minutes. It yields a Total Stress Score from three scales: Parental Distress, Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction and Difficult Child.
