Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery

The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery is based on the theory of higher cortical functioning by Aleksandr R. Luria. In contrast to the more psychometric and quantitative approach of most western clinical neuropsychologists, Luria utilized unstructured qualitative techniques in assessing neurologically impaired patients. Golden and his colleagues have attempted to integrate Luria?s techniques into American clinical neuropsychology.

Scoring: The Luria-Nebraska test generates fourteen scores: motor, rhythm, tactile, visual, receptive speech, expressive speech, writing, reading, arithmetic, memory, intellectual processes, pathognomic, left hemisphere, and right hemisphere.

Reliability and Validity: Several studies have reflected positively on the Luria-Nebraska test. When compared to the Halstead Neuropsychological Battery, they were found to be roughly equivalent in the hands of experienced clinical neuropsychologists in discriminating between a mixed group of psychiatric and brain-damaged populations. Each battery achieved an overall hit rate of approximately 80%. The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery was also found to separate brain-injured patients from pseudoneurological patients with an approximately 80% hit rate. The hit rate for various other groups are as follows: ideopathic seizure group (77.3%), seizures secondary to brain injury group (88.9%), and normals (87.5%).
