The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is a norm-referenced achievement test for students in kindergarten though 8th grade, developed by the Iowa Testing Program at the University of Iowa and published as part of the Riverside 2000 Integrated Assessment Program by the Riverside Publishing Company. Forms K and L of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills were published in 1994. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is made up of 10 levels. Levels 5 and 6 are intended for administration to students in kindergarten and 1st grade with no time limit. These levels are only published in one length, known as the Complete Battery. The Complete Battery covers listening, vocabulary, language, and mathematics with optional sections for reading and word analysis. Levels 5 and 6 are only available in one form, Form K. Levels 7 and 8 are intended for administration to students in 1st through 3rd grade with no time limit. These levels are published in three lengths, known as the Survey Battery, the Core Battery, and the Complete Battery. The Survey Battery is the shortest, containing a section each for reading, language, and mathematics, with an optional section for math computation. The Core Battery is in the middle, containing a section each for listening, vocabulary, reading, language, mathematics concepts, and mathematics problems, with Description of Standardized Tests Used by Various Jurisdictions 191 optional sections for word analysis and mathematics computation. |
The Complete Battery is the longest, containing social studies, science, and sources of information sections—in addition to all the sections included in the Core Battery. Levels 7 and 8 (all three batteries) are published in two equivalent forms, Form K and Form L. Levels 9–14 are intended for administration to students in 3rd through 9th grade. These levels are also published in three lengths, the Survey Battery, the Core Battery, and the Complete Battery. The Survey Battery contains a section each for reading, language, and mathematics, with an optional section for math computation. The Core Battery contains a section each for vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, usage and expression, math concepts and estimation, math problem solving and data interpretation, and math computation. The Complete Battery contains social studies, science, maps and diagrams, and reference materials sections—in addition to all the sections included in the Core Battery. Levels 8–14 (all three batteries) are published in two equivalent forms, Form K and Form L. Forms K and L of the Test of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP) were normed (in a joint norming program with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills) in the spring and fall of 1992. The norming was conducted using a stratified random sample of public school districts, Catholic private schools, and other private schools. The spring sample included approximately 170,000 students, while the fall sample included approximately 100,000 students.
