Aberrant Behavior Checklist - ABC

Question: What is the Aberrant Behavior Checklist?
Answer: The Aberrant Behavior Checklist is a symptom Checklist for assessing problem behaviors in developmentally challenged individuals within multiple settings. The test is designed for ages 6 - 54 and the test takes about 10 - 15 minutes to complete.

The ABC is a symptom checklist for assessing problem behaviors of children and adults with mental retardation at home, in residential facilities, ICF's/MR, and work training centers. It is also useful for classifying problem behaviors of children and adolescents with mental retardation in educational settings, residential and community-based facilities, and developmental centers.

The ABC-Residential was empirically developed by factor analysis on data from 1,000 residents. The 58 items resolve into five subscales:

    1. Irritability and Agitation
    2. Lethargy and Social Withdrawal
    3. Stereotypic Behavior
    4. Hyperactivity and Noncompliance
    5. Inappropriate Speech

The ABC-Community item content is the same as for the ABC-Residential, except that home, school, and workplace are listed as the relevant settings. The ABC-Community has been validated and normed for such client and rater pairs as teacher and parent ratings of children in developmentally handicapped classes and care provide ratings of adults in group homes.

The ABC asks for degree of retardation, the person's medical status, and current medication condition. Then 58 specific symptoms are rated and an extensive manual gives comprehensive descriptions for each assessed behavior. The Checklist can be completed by parents, special educators, psychologists, direct caregivers, nurses, and others with knowledge of the person being assessed.

Extensive psychometric assessment of the ABC has indicated that its subscales have high internal consistency, adequate reliability, and established validity. Average subscale scores are available for both U.S. and overseas residential facilities for children and adults living in the community.
